FPL 22:23: Season Review – What a drab season it was!
Last FPL season was really drab, even though I have had ~400k OR finishes in the past, Haaland permanent captain and multiple Double Gameweek’s made the FPL season really drab. It always felt like everyone had the same big hitters and punts and there was very limited scope for going left of field and expecting massive gains, that thrill wasn’t just there. So much so that every year I tend to save the week by week FPL history and analyze where things were good and where they went south, but nope, this year nothing.
It has now been 6 seasons since I had my best finish of 35k and since then I have only once finished the FPL season with a 5 digit rank, so in all honesty FPL has been tough in last 5 years for me. None the less, I love the fact that FPL gets me involved with all the teams across Premier league and this brings me back to FPL with the same vigour year on year.
I started the last season without Erling Haaland and that meant my GW rank was close to 2.7M at the end of GW1.
Rodrigo was the star for me early in the season and some differential players like Raheem Sterling in the team, helped with little bit of a turnaround and my FPL team’s OR rose to 250k within first 6 GWs. I felt I was finally reversing a trend that had plagued my FPL gameplay for years. I ALWAYS start rusty and then I am playing catchup. It felt like this season was going to be different…
and then I took an atrocious decision of not captaining the most in-form FPL player in Haaland against United around GW8 / GW9 and that meant I dropped to OR of 1M and then in the haste to claw back rank I got some differential punts in the team and they didn’t work out and OR dropped dramatically to 2.3M by the end of GW17. At this point I was 107 points behind top 100K and I set that as my season target, with a dynamic short term target. This helped put things in perspective.
But the focus didn’t last too long, missed a deadline for DGW19 and that brought me down to 3.1M OR. Season was pretty much over, but I usually do keep playing for the fun of it and then the Rashford Triple Captain brought my OR to 1.37M in DGW22. Post that I made gradual progress but never really had a massive gains which meant I kept trudging along and managed to reach 527K by end of DGW34. Although I had closed the gap in Overall Rank but was still 94 points away from Top 100K.
I did try a couple of punts post that but didn’t get those drastic rank swings and finished the season around 455K. It was another decent second half of the season for me and this season I hope I have a much better first half of the season and build the momentum to finish inside top 30k (This has pretty much been my target for 3 years now, hope I am lucky this time).
Hope all of you enjoy FPL as much as I do, Green Arrows Every One #GAEO!
