FPL 20/21: GW 6 Review: So near yet so far | Team for GW 7

GW 6 was a classic example of so near yet so far for me. When I wildcarded post GW 4, I had players with 3- 4 weeks horizon in mind, and they seem to be delivering – The only problem is that I am not picking the right players for my playing XI. Last week I had 19 points on bench and this week I had 26!

As I mentioned last week, Bamford to Konsa was a last moment switch for me and boy did that hurt. A -16 point swing can be tragic specially when your rank is floating around 3 million. This could have easily been a 60 point week and with average hovering around 50, could have led to significant improvement in my FPL overall rank.

Review of last game week’s performance:

Positives

  • Spurs Attackers yet again – Son, Kane combination continues to deliver. 16 points between them is a decent return in a low coring gameweek. They continue to have decent fixtures, so at this moment I am pretty happy to continue with both of them, however sooner rather than later I will have to let go of one of them and next couple of gameweeks could help me in deciding.
  • Foden – Foden did not start the game against West Ham but came on in second half to score and salvage a draw for Man City. Even though he did score for me, I am slightly divided if he provides value to the team in long term.
  • Saiss – Lucky clean sheet points from Saiss, he was substituted after 67 minutes and although Wolves conceded later in the game, his clean sheet points were secure. At the moment he is being played out of position in a LWB role, not sure how long that is going to last, but he is the highest FPL points scoring defender in the game at this point in time and he is here to stay in my team

Negatives

  • Grealish – I have learnt it the hard way yet again that chasing points rarely works out in FPL. I got him in my team after a superb performance against Liverpool. Since then he has 4 points in 2 gameweeks and having seen Aston Villa’s games, it seems Ross Barkley has taken the role of being creator in chief. I might be wrong but I don’t see Grealish scoring big anytime soon.
  • Porous defense – Except for Saiss who kept a lucky clean sheet, other 4 defensive players in my team managed 6 points, some of them lost clean sheets in last moment but that does not change the fact that my defense is not scoring enough points for me.

Near-Misses

  • Bench Selection – Bamford to Konsa last moment turned out to be a huge disaster for me. I had taken this decision based on Aston Villa’s fantastic defensive record thus far, combined with Leeds scoring only 2 goals in 3 games prior to this one, but it was a stark reminder that form doesn’t matter much in premier league and FPL.
  • Last moment goals – First Crystal Palace conceded a 90+5th minute goal, to wipe off Mitchell’s clean sheet and later Brigton conceded in 83rd minute to West Brom, to rob me of Ryan and Lamptey’s clean sheets. 3 Clean Sheets and associated bonus points is a big swing. It signifies what a gameweek it could have been nut was not.

Team for GW 7

As I sat to pick team for Gameweek 7, I realised I have many mid priced midfielders with all potential to score good points but I am not sure of their ability to consistently score big points and for this very reason I plan to take 2 of them out and replace them with 1 higher priced midfielder along with 1 midfielder who is a consistent starter and will continue to fetch 2 points in case called upon.

I had to choose two between Grealish, Foden and Pulisic to remove from my team. Grealish was more or less fixed in my mind based on my reasons above. Between Foden and Pulsic, the former seems to be in better form and is priced lower as well, on the other hand Pulisic is yet to get going and after a goal in the champions league mid week game against a Burnley team who have lost 3 out of last 4 matches, could be a perfect platform for Pulisic to get going.

Since I was uncertain I decided to choose based on who I intend to get in my team. It was slim pickings with Fernandes and Rashford being the only 2 realistic options for me. Aubameyang is slightly too over priced to get with Salah and Kane already in my team.

So between Fernandes and Rashford, I believe Fernandes offers better FPL value but Rashford seems to be one of those crazy streaks now, having scored a hattrick as a substitute against RB Leipzig in the Champions League. Further based on price, the choice boiled down to who between (Fernandes + Mount) and (Rashford + Pulisic) offers better value. Going for potential and differential value, I decide to go for the latter combination. Also picked up Orial Romeu for the 5th midfielder spot.

Transfers – Grealish + Foden —> Rashford + Romeu

Captain Pick

Once again Salah, Son and Kane offer captaincy choices for my team. I am also tempted with the option of a punt on Pulisic against battered Burnley, On further I realised Burnley have only conceded 5 in last 4 matches, which is not so bad and hence Pulisic might not be a great idea, specially given I have gone for a couple of differentials in Rashford and Pulisic already.

West Ham have only conceded 4 in last 4 matches and seem to be doing well defensively, whereas Brighton have conceded 9 in their last 4 matches. and their playing style offers perfect foil for Spurs’ counter attacking play, thus Son and Kane seem to be better options. Now it is a tossup between them, I choose to go with Son as he is a midfielder in the game and offers better return for same contribution as compared to a striker.

So going ahead with Captain Son.

Hope you enjoyed reading, best of luck for Game week 7!
